Sugar Reflection
Recently in Science, we have been studying sugar. To learn more about sugar, we first came up with a list of all different names for sugar, and we came up with a lot. It sort of shows you how much sugar can hide itself in everyday foods, as Carwai said. We then research all the stages of sugar. They explained the temperature ranges and the appearance of the sugar when it is brought to that tempature. The names we definitely hilarious. The different stages of sugar are, Thread, softball, Firm ball, hard ball, soft crack, hard crack. So based on this, we decided to split into groups, and make sugar in each of these different sections, I was in a group with Ruby and Charmaine, and we decided to make Hardball gummies. We went online to get a recipe. This became very difficult because almost every recipe we found used jello. But finally we found one that just used gelatin, and our gummies actually ended up tasting that way! Here is the link to the recipe. This is a really good recipe if you want to make gummies, but if i were you I would put in less gelatin, but over than that, really good. I think we should have chose a more challenging food, because i thought making the gummies were quite easy, we did however, make a few mistakes. I think we should have put in less gelatin, because the gummies ended up tasting like it. I also know that we should have let them set for longer before we ate them, because we found one stuck to the door the day later and it was the perfect gummy consistency. But I thought that this project was really fun and that it gave me a whole other view of sugar, what I would have liked to touch more on, is how sugar has negative effects on the body. I though, overall, learnt so much and feel like my understanding of sugar, as well as the science behind it has doubled over the corse of this experiment.
