Great Artists Reflection
I thought that great artist this year was the most productive great artists I have ever had. Choosing our artists was really simple. Rob suggest Sister corita kent, we researched her, all thought her graphic art was really cool, came to an agreement, and bam!, we had our artist(I, personally thought that her being a nun was really awesome). We then had to deicide on a few projects.
We had all done our research before great artists time had officially started, so we were all set. We knew from her art that she used a lot of different fonts on one canvas. So we came up with this idea. We were going to spell something across our cabinets using all these letters. We first had to find out what that was. After a lot of discussing we came upon an agreement. We were going to spell out sister corita kent. (wow, how could we have not thought about that before!). Another idea was brought forth. To all get individual frames to add to each letter. The frames actually added a lot more than the idea maker thought it to be. Guess who said the idea? It was me! Yes, it was a moment of true genius. I think those letters turned out very well and added a whole lot to the room.
Sister corita kent often took black and white photos and put one color over them to make them more colorful. So we had the idea to make different photos of us posing, blow them up, put them on an old door, and highlight different features in colored tissue. My picture had my hair, leggings and a volleyball net that was in the background highlighted. When we were all done, the group with only three people on a door’s door looked a little bit boring since there was so much open space. So we all diced to ad our names in cool font. I thought that was a good idea, because it really made the door look even better. I thought that project was very successful and definitely was one of our better ideas.
We wanted to do a big collaborative project on the wall from the moment we started brainstorming, but the problem is that we didn’t know what to do. So when Ruby and Charmaine finished their letters (actually Ruby didn’t she didn’t even start them but she knew that she could get them finished later), they started to work on them. They got big sheets of construction like paper and got to work. What they would do is cut shapes(mostly long rectangles) And form them in a sister corita kent like way. They would then bring nice words into the picture like love, peace, joy, etc. Once they had done three of them. Carwai pointed out that maybe come others might want to start working on them. Once they were all done we put them together making a ginormous square on the wall. I think that was one of the maine and most Corita art piece in the room.
We then had our quote wall. We started off thinking that we were going to do a giant story like book with all these quotes that we came up with, but instead we put them into cool fonts and taped them to the wall. We came up with this idea because sister corita kent put a lot of quotes into her artwork. Some of my quotes were,”learn from the past, live today, think for the future”, and one I kinda stole from a lot of people who say this around NMY, “technology is a tool, not a past time”. I think this quote wall really made people realize what Sister corita kent was about.
The last thing that I did was my individual art pieces. Here is a bit I wrote about each of them:
This personal project was inspired by Corita way of sharing things she liked. So this was my way of sharing something that I loved; Surfing. What I did was find all types of surfer magazines online, and I dragged them all to a word document, making different sizes of magazines. I then used glue mixed with a little bit of water to paste them on the canvas. Then I used the same glue as before, and put tissue over it. That was my way to express my love for surfing using art.
This project started as me painting for fun, using the technique of color fading. Then realizing that I used Sister Corita’s colors that she often used, I turned it into something that was more Corita. I used her black and white photos, with color over it method, with a couple of pictures that has people having fun in a sunset that reflect the colors I used for the background. I then used an over used, but quite frankly nice quote, “Fun in the Sun”, reflecting on my view of the pictures.
